P0141 meaning: O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor 2) Explained

Learn what P0141 means, common causes, live scan PIDs, DIY checks, and when to call a specialist.

P0141 meaning: O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor 2) Explained

P0141 meaning

P0141 means the O2 sensor heater circuit on Bank 1 Sensor 2 is taking longer than expected to reach operating temperature. This is a common heater-related fault that can affect emissions and fuel efficiency.

What the code means

The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors how fast the heater in the downstream oxygen sensor warms up. If it doesn't reach the required temperature within a set time, it triggers P0141. This sensor helps fine-tune the air-fuel mixture after the catalytic converter.

Common causes

  • Faulty oxygen sensor (Bank 1 Sensor 2)
  • Wiring or connector issues to the sensor
  • Blown fuse in the heater circuit
  • Poor ground connection
  • Faulty PCM (rare)

What shows on a live scan

During a live data scan, look for these PIDs:

  • O2 Sensor 2 Heater Current
  • O2 Sensor 2 Heater Voltage
  • Engine Coolant Temperature
  • Intake Air Temperature

These values help determine if the heater is receiving power and if the sensor is responding correctly. Values vary by vehicle — confirm with a specialist if abnormal.

DIY-safe check

Inspect the wiring and connector for damage or corrosion. Check the relevant fuse in the fuse box. If the fuse is blown, replace it and see if the code returns. If not, the issue may be deeper.

When to see a specialist

If the code returns after a simple fix, or if multiple related codes appear, it's time to consult a professional. Heater circuit issues can involve complex diagnostics that require specialized tools.
